Let me set the scene: It’s 8 p.m. on a Friday, I’m blasting  Beyoncé’s Renaissance album, and my friends and I are crowding around the bathroom mirror concealing pimples, spackling on highlighter, and struggling to stick on stubborn DIY lash extensions. We take a quick selfie before dashing out the door for a night of drinks and dancing, but I quickly realize my look is missing something: a good lipstick.

My usual go-to is lip gloss, but on this night, I wanted to try something new. I was inspired by Chanel ambassador Margot Robbie’s Oscars look and popped on the label’s Rouge Allure Velvet Nuit Blanche Matte Lipstick. Given that I’d be out past midnight, I knew it would be a good opportunity to test out its staying power — and boy did it hold up.

The lipstick comes in seven shades, labeled from midnight to 06:00 a.m., and ranging from red, fuchsia, to brown. It has a soft and velvety matte finish that’s not flat or dry and is buildable and applies effortlessly without much product needed. The product feels lightweight despite being infused with shea butter and jojoba oil to leave lips feeling soft and moisturized.

My first impression was that it glides onto the lips smoothly and consistently and is easy to blend with warm fingertips for a stained look. But for the sake of testing, I built it up to its full brick orange shade in just two layers; the color was rich, opaque, and super flattering. I was also surprised by how this lipstick served as a smoothing filter on my textured lips.

I kicked off the night with a dinner of wine, pasta, bread, and salad, which really put the lipstick to the test. There was very little transfer onto the glass, utensils, or food, and after dinner, my lips had a very visible stain to them; the color was still pigmented and my lips were supple and moisturized. In fact, the lipstick lasted from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. with virtually no change in vibrance or hydration. I’ve since deemed this Chanel Matte Lipstick my go-to for a GNO.

If you want a filter-like lipstick that stays put through dinner and drinks, shop Chanel’s Rouge Allure Velvet Nuit Blanche Matte Lipstick in multiple colors, below.
